A friend emailed me a story way back in 2016. It went something like this:
Once upon a time, a woodcutter strained to saw down a tree. A young woman who was watching asked, “What are you doing?”
“Are you blind?” the woodcutter replied. “I’m cutting down this tree.”
The young woman was unabashed. “You look exhausted! Take a break. Sharpen your saw.”
The woodcutter explained to the young woman that he had been sawing for hours and did not have time to take a break.
The young woman argued, “If you sharpen the saw, you would cut down the tree much faster.”
The woodcutter said, “I don’t have time to sharpen the saw. Don’t you see I’m too busy?”
So if the woodcutter spent an hour sharpening his saw (apparently a 10” saw has about 80 teeth and it takes around 5 seconds to file each one; so a saw three times as long means in that time, he’d get a tea break too), he’d probably be able to cut trees down in half the time.
Now the point is, most people don’t realise that by spending a bit of time and having the patience to look at ways to do things quicker, better and with less stress, strain and hassle, you actually end up saving huge amounts of time.
A great example of this is to allocate jobs you don’t need to do and train members of your team to do them, which will free up your time to spend on more important stuff. Telling yourself you’re far too busy and it’s easier and quicker to do it yourself is a total fallacy.
