Turns out my best friends biggest customer, who she was always worried she may lose, she lost.
It was then that she realised they were actually her worst customer and one of the reasons she wasn’t growing as fast as she wanted to.
Let me explain how that came about.
My friend Doris (not her real name) and her partner have a social media business and they’re really good at what they do.
They had one customer who was doing pretty well out of their efforts, so they asked for more…and more…and more.
Trouble is, they didn’t want to pay too much more, and Doris and her partner found this one big customer was swallowing up most of their time.
Then they started making more and more demands for their time and refused to allow them to outsource even the simple stuff (personally, I’d have sacked them there and then. No one has the right to tell someone what they should and shouldn’t do in their own business).
Anyway, long story short, their biggest customer got into some sort of difficulties and decided to stop using them. No slow down or phasing out the service; they just ended the relationship with no concern of the consequences to poor Doris.
Now that’s a lesson in itself.
The customer that make unreasonable demands don’t really care much for a two-way relationship; all they care about is themselves and they will dump you at the drop of a hat.
And now after Doris and her partner have had a good look at their business, they’ve suddenly realised their biggest and best customer was in fact their worst nightmare.
They’re now happy bunnies with a very clear focus on what they need to do to grow their business and they have the time to do it.
