What does that mean?
Russ and I attended an Education Day last 2018 hosted by our trade organisation the British Promotional Merchandise Association.
One of the speakers spoke about Millenials and most in the room including myself looked puzzled.
“Is there anyone here who doesn’t know what a Millennial is?”
Shouted Lee, the speaker.
Most of the audience waved an arm in the air shaking their heads at the same time.
“Ok, I’ll tell you”. said Lee… “A Millennial is someone who was born after 1981.”
So basically a Millennial is someone who grew up in an electronics-filled and increasingly online and socially-networked world.
So what? I hear you say.
Well these electronics-filled and increasingly online and socially-networked people who are in their mid 20’s to mid 30’s happen to be our customers and with all the additional online ways people are able to advertise their products these days, YouTube, Google, Facebook and email to name a few, they have received the most marketing attention.
What does that mean to me? You may be thinking.
I’ll tell you.
It means that most of the advertising companies spend to attract new business is not working.
And that’s not all.
Because the Millennials are literally bombarded with advertising messages these days, even offline advertising isn’t doing its job too well these days.
Think about it.
The average working person is bombarded with between 4,000 to 10,000 advertisements each day. And do you know what?
If you asked someone “How many do you remember?” the answer would be around zero.
Now there is a form of advertising that has a massively lower cost per impression than any other form, of media and that is…
When asked in a survey if they could recall the name of the company that sent them a promotional item a mahoosive 85% said they could recall the name of the company.
Also most people keep a useful promotional product for up to two years.
