Why would you offer someone a discount when they’re happy to pay full price?
I’ve never understood why some people feel the need to give you money off their products for no logical reason at all.
A couple of weeks ago, someone tried that old chestnut out on me and probably wished he hadn’t.
I was walking past a local Indian restaurant and could see in the window they had a buffet service. As I walked closer, the smell hit me. The food looked amazing, so I walked in to take a closer look.
That was it, I was hooked and decided I’d treat myself to a takeaway.
It was self-service. You just picked up a metal takeaway container, filled it with whatever you fancied, sealed it with the card cover, put it in a little paper carrier bag, and paid your money.
When I went to pay, I was greeted by a smiling waiter.
“That’ll be £6 please, Sir,” he said, cheerily, and with no prompting or reason at all, he added, “But you can pay me just £5.”
I looked at him, really puzzled, and said, “Isn’t your food worth £6, then?”
“Of course, it is, Sir,” He couldn’t really explain why he wanted to give me money off apart from he thought I looked like a nice guy.
I jokingly pointed out that I wasn’t such a nice guy at all and he shouldn’t be afraid to charge what he felt his food was worth. Oh, and he should stop giving company profits away so freely.
My point to all this is this:
He probably felt that by giving me money off I’d come back again. But how could he know that? A better option would be to have a loyalty or reward card, so every time you buy you get points (for example, 5 visits = a free meal the next time you buy).
Anyway, I’ve been back a couple of times since and he seems to have got the message; same happy service and big smile but no discount.
