How many companies would try and stop you buying something from them?
Not many I’d imagine, so when one of my team says “I don’t want you to have that” to a client, it can take them a bit by surprise.
It happens all the time and for all the right reasons, like a couple of years ago.
One of our clients, who we haven’t heard from for a while, had a catalogue from us and he’d chosen a few promotional products he wanted details and samples of (around four or five items, lanyards, power banks, pens, that sort of stuff).
“Ah,” said Wills. And as tactfully as he could, he suggested he sends a few other similar items that he felt would be more suitable.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with run-of-the-mill, it does have its place (according to the Collins English Dictionary it means, ordinary, average, or undistinguished in quality, character, or nature; not special or excellent), but when it comes to promotional products, stand-out-from-the-crowd is more likely to get you noticed.
Anyway, Wills sent his client the samples he asked for and added a few other similar items.
Long story short, his client preferred one or two of the alternatives and was grateful for the expert help and advice he received.
So whenever you’re looking for stuff, be it for work or for your own personal use, always ask the experts their opinion before you choose. You may not always agree with them but at least they just might mention something you never would have considered.
A really useful tip when buying promotional products is “Avoid Boring.” If the product is different to most similar items, it will get noticed. It’s more likely to be a talking point in the office or between groups of people and, if your promotional products get talked about, your company name will be remembered for all the right reasons.
