Shortcuts are great and I love them.
It started when I was a kid and I used to race my cousin home after school.
We would leave school at exactly the same time and I would run full pelt all the way home.
He’d come rushing through the front door at around 4:12pm and stare at me sitting comfortably on the sofa, arms folded and a smug look on my face.
What he didn’t know about was the shortcut through the bus station. It would shave a good two minutes off the time and despite how hard and fast he ran he never beat me.
He must have thought I was some sort of super sprinting athlete, but the truth was, he was probably a faster runner than me, he just didn’t understand the power of shortcuts.
Even today, I obsess about shortcuts or, how to get things done quicker. How to get quotes to customers in minutes rather than hours, how to get an order delivered to our customers earlier than our competitors, and how to keep in touch with all our customers regularly without having to work all hours of the day.
Thing is we all rely on shortcuts.
Did you make the computer or smartphone you’re using to read this email? No of course not, you paid someone else to make it for you.
Did you grow the food you ate last night? Probably not, you paid someone to grow it for you.
These and more are all shortcuts. Ways of multiplying your effectiveness and usage of time.
It’s the same in our field too, isn’t it?

P.S. I must admit, it was great fun some days after school seeing my cousin 100 yards ahead of me, his little legs going hell for leather, only to find time and time again that I always appeared better than him.
