Ever see a drunk walking? He knows exactly where he wants to go but his head is all jumbled up. His actions are not congruent with what his brain is telling him.
I saw this guy a couple of weeks ago it was a Saturday at around 5pm. It was outside my place and he appeared lost and looking a bit worse for wear. A guy walks up to him and asks him something (I’m looking out from my living room window so I can’t hear what they’re saying). The drunk, swaying from side to side mumbles a few words and suddenly the guy points and beckons the drunk to follow him.
They walk off, the guy in a straight line and the drunk was very carefully and slowly with a very serious look of concentration, placing one foot in front of the other. His feet were not quite landing where he wanted them to which made him sway from side to side and then suddenly jerk upright in an attempt to stop himself falling.
A couple of minutes later as I was thinking how kind is was of the guy to help the drunk get to where he wanted to go when suddenly the drunk appeared outside my window again, alone and zigzagging in the opposite direction.
Why? I haven’t a clue. Maybe it was a case of not trusting a stranger. Or maybe he just thought he knew better.
It’s a bit like that in business too. We don’t tend to take too seriously what someone we don’t know tells us and there are times when we think we know better than someone who’s more skilled than us.
